Root Cellar Music Studio bills in quarter hour (15 minute) increments. Clients agree to the following hourly rates:

  • $60 per hour for recording, set-up, level checking and all recording prep.
  • $40 per hour for editing, mixing, mastering, data transfers during a session, and CD burning during a session.

Booking Deposit and Cancellation Policy

A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a studio session. Sessions will not be placed on the Studio’s schedule until a deposit is received. Clients may cancel or reschedule a session with at least 48 hours (2 days) notice.

  • If client cancels at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled session, the deposit will be applied to client’s first/next session or applied to a future session (up to one year from receipt)
  • If the session is not cancelled or rescheduled at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled start time, the deposit is forfeited. Any cancellations made within less than 48 hours notice will be charged a $50 cancellation fee, which must be paid in full prior to commencement of the next recording session.

Billing and Payment

Each Artist, Band or Project must designate one person responsible for payments. If studio payments are being made by multiple band members, it is the designee’s responsibility to collect band members’ contributions and make one payment to Root Cellar Music Studio.

  • At the conclusion of each session an e-mail with session notes and any balance retained or owed to Root Cellar Music Studio will be sent to the payment designee.
  • Payment is required upon completion of each session. Sessions are billed as a minimum of one hour, and then in 15 minute increments thereafter. Payments are accepted in the form of cash, personal or company check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX or Discover Card. Upon request, Root Cellar Music Studio can issue PayPal invoices via e-mail to the payment designee.
  • There is a $35 fee for returned checks.
  • Root Cellar Music Studio reserves the right to withhold all completed work until payment is received.   

Point of Contact

Each Artist, Band or Project must designate one person as their point of contact. The point of contact will receive all mixes, MP3s and session notes via e-mail, and full WAV files via Dropbox. It is the point of contact’s responsibility to forward the files and communicate the information to additional band members they want to receive the files and information.

Studio Time
The session clock begins at the scheduled session start time or when the Engineer starts working with the client to set up equipment, get levels, debug instrument problems (such as hum, buzz, MIDI, etc.), whichever is earlier. If clients are late for any reason, they will be charged from the scheduled session start time, with no exceptions.

Is the studio is available, Clients can enter the studio and start setting up 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. The session clock will begin at that early start time. Please text the studio Engineer before traveling to the session to determine if an early setup is possible.

If clients wish to to take a meal break during long sessions, they may do so off the clock. This allows the engineer to work on other projects in the studio or take a break. If Clients want to work through the meal break to listen to the session, do edits, overdubs, etc., the clock continues to run. The Engineer may choose to eat and work at the same time. 

  • When Client indicates they are finished and the equipment is no longer in use, the clock stops.
  • If a master is being burned, the clock continues to run until the master is finished.
  • Depending on when and how long a recording session may be, the engineer may take a meal break at the appropriate times. The client will not be charged for such breaks.
  • Clean up is on us.


All data is recorded to an internal 7200 RPM hard drive. At 4 a.m. every morning, the system backs up all recorded data to a second identical internal drive. Once per month all data is backed up to a third external drive stored off-site and to a fourth external drive stored on-site. All data will remain on the studio hard drives for a period of 90 days after a project is completed. After 90 days of project completion, the data will be the responsibility of the client.

  • Studio shall endeavor to secure all recording equipment/media owned by Client and left or stored on studio premises but is not responsible for loss or damage.
  • In the event of loss or damage of Client’s recording media due to willful negligence, Studio shall be responsible for replacement of no more than the value of the total replacement cost of the said recording media.


A one-time payment of $30 will be charged for creating a DDP file. DDP file delivery is included in the one-time fee. One CD will be burned and provided to the designated point of contact. A digital copy of the DDP files is available upon request.

  • Account must be paid in full prior to receiving master. Masters are generally provided on CD, DVD or hard drive.

Full File Transfer

A one-time file transfer fee of $25 is required for full session files to be transferred to a hard drive with Mac OS compatibility provided by the Client. The full file transfer usually takes place after the project has been mastered. On occasion, the full file transfer might be used to allow a Client to continue work at another studio or at the Client’s home studio. Client is aware that the files will be Logic files and will require Logic software to open.


  • Engineer will burn one (1) complimentary CD per session. Every additional CD burned is at a cost of a $1 each.
  • Root Cellar Music Studio hourly rates do not include the cost of studio musicians or equipment rental.
  • It is the Client’s responsibility to book enough studio time.
  • Damage to the studio property of any kind that is a result of anyone in Client's party or group will be assessed to Client's account.
  • Absolutely no smoking, alcohol, illegal/illicit drugs, or illicit behavior is allowed in Root Cellar Music Studio. Smoking is available outside on the back deck only.
  • Studio reserves the right to make other financial arrangements with its clients.
  • Studio is not responsible for ANY property left on premises by Client, (other than recording media).
  • Clients recording media left on premises 30 days after completion of last recording session or service shall become the property of Studio if all monies due to Studio have not been paid.
  • Receipt of recording media from Studio to Client is acknowledgement between both parties that the quality of all services rendered by Studio is satisfactory to Client and shall release Studio from any and all liability regarding said recording media and services rendered.
  • Costs will be assessed for damage or breakage to headphones.
  • Studio reserves the right to refuse to work with any Client for whatever reason.
  • Studio’s liability with respect to "downtime" of any and all studio sessions as a result from equipment malfunction or availability, hired musicians, acts of nature or public utility companies, etc., shall be limited solely to the studio time of such booked session; and Clients agree to hold Root Cellar Music Studio harmless from any and all damages from such “downtime.”
  • Studio makes no warranties either express or implied other than those contained herein. Studio shall not be liable for unforeseen consequential damages of any kind. Should Studio be unable to conduct a booked session for any reason, then Studio warrants that it shall re-book such canceled booking at another time that is mutually available to Studio and the Client.
  • The client affirms that they are the rightful owner or assignee of the materials to be recorded or reproduced. Root Cellar Music Studio is not responsible for copyright violations, talent or creative royalties, mechanical licenses, or any other liabilities of such material
